National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The high-profile landmark maritime LEED Silver project for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) based in Newport, Oregon was built as a joint venture between West Coast Contractors and Andersen Construction. Andersen provided the on-land construction efforts and West Coast Contractors provided the highly complex piledriving and in- and over- water portions of the project. WCC's marine construction consisted of using four 100-to 200-ton cranes which were limited on the number of piles driven per day in order to be sensitive to the surrounding habitats. Weather and ocean tides added to the challenges of the marine environment, along with the in-water work window from November through February in order to protect the runs of native Coho Salmon. By using a custom GPS guided, barge-mounted template, WCC was able to complete the maritime pile driving in record time.
